Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
A term used sometimes with a little confusion, as obsessions
and compulsions are not the same. They are common only in their
anxiety related problems.
Obsessions
An obsession can be an act or a thought that persistently dwells
on a persons consciousness and despite his will, and despite
the fact that he knows of its abnormality.
It is difficult to control or to be rid of this obsessional
neurosis. Constant thought processes can dominate a persons
mind and be very difficult to be rid of. The obsessive broods
about the act or the thought, and gets no relief satisfaction
or peace of mind from performing the task, unlike the compulsive.
So the distressing anxious feelings return in minutes. Obsessives
are haunted by their own thoughts.
Examples:
Extreme concern with hygiene, worry re dirt and contamination.
Excessive hand washing.
Checking rechecking things repeatedly, with little let up, e.g.
locks doors counting money.
Certain rituals magical beliefs that have to be performed for
fear of doom if not.
Extreme poor sleep patterns. Negative thought.
Excessive need for all to be in order or equal, e.g. touch one
item on leaving a house and must touch another of equal distance
apart.
Excessive jealousy possessiveness.
Compulsions
As compulsions do help the person to feel some relief from their
anxiety, they feel compelled to perform them the frequency and
severity of the same, are often linked to the degree of anxiety.
Therefore they can become very addictive, and necessary, to
gain some relief.
Examples:
Nailbiting.
Smoking.
Over eating/comfort eating/binge eating.
Excess of alcohol
Pursuits in forms of gambling.
Drug abuse.
Self harm,e.g. cutting, biting oneself.
Excessive sexual activity.
